The Hyphenated Editor

Jay-Jay Flanagan-Grannemann

Hi! I'm Jay-Jay Flanagan-Grannemann, Joel's wife, and editor of the Servants of the Moon and Sun novels and stories! I'm also an independent copyeditor, line editor, proofreader, and book formatter, as well as an audiobook narrator and producer! (Let's just say I love stories, and I really hate monotony!)

I'm a firm believer in the Oxford/Harvard/serial comma and a staunch supporter of reading commas. If you are as well, we might be a good fit!

I always strive to preserve an author's voice in their work, while making their prose as clear, powerful, and grammatically correct as possible.

I also have an unusual method of editing. If you get disouraged at the thought of turning your manuscript over to an editor and waiting weeks (or possibly months!) for a lengthy editorial letter full of queries and a full manuscript full of thousands of edits to review at one time, you might find my approach more manageable.

I edit 3-5 chapters at a time, repeatedly, until they are close to publishable, before moving on to the next chunk of chapters. You never have to wait more than a few days for edits, and you don't have to review more than a chapter at a time. And I never send editorial letters: all my work is done in the manuscript, either via direct edits or comments. I'll make a final pass or two after I've reviewed the whole book to clean up anything that only became apparent after later chapters and do the final proofread.

If my process sounds intriguing, contact me to see if I have availability to review your project to see if we might be able to work together to make your manuscript the best it can be.

If you have any questions about editing, formatting, or audiobooks (whether in Servants of the Moon and Sun material or elsewhere), please feel free to shoot me an email at TheHyphenatedEditor@ServantsoftheMoonandSun.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

Moon, Waves. and Star Symbols

I appeared with Joel on The Middle-Aged Bodcast podcast episode released on July 8th, 2025. We had a great time talking to Rich and T.A. about how we work together to produce the books and stories Joel writes, and about our recent journey toward weight loss and healthy lifestyle improvements. (And yes, we know we are unusually obsessed with ranch dressing!)

If you've ever wondered exactly how we produce the books you love completely in-house (except for the covers), this is where you can find out!

You can listen to the podcast here or on YouTube.

Moon, Waves. and Star Symbols

I presented a session on self-editing at the Make Books Better Summit in December 2024.

The session was titled "How to Save Money When Working with a Professional Copy and Line Editor."

I appeared on The Picky Bookworm podcast with Joel on November 23rd, 2024. You can listen on the web via Spotify here, or grab the episode with your favorite podcatcher! Please be gentle with any reviews or comments, as this was my first podcast appearance!
